Marine Electrical Installs Customers' Own Equipment

Internet_ExplorerWhat reaction would you get if you took your own food into your favourite restaurant and asked them to cook it for you?

FACT: YOU CAN NOW BUY MARINE ELECTRONICS ON LINE AT LOWER PRICES THAN TRADE

Many marine businesses refuse to fit customer-supplied equipment and, as a result, there are hundreds of sub-standard installations carried out by well-meaning boat owners.  Failure of these installations can be inconvenient at best, and lethal at worst.

FACT: THE MAJORITY OF DIY MARINE ELECTRONIC INSTALLATIONS PUT THE BOAT OWNER AT RISK

The problem facing the DIY installer is that you need access to a wide range of specialist bits and pieces and, when these are not available, it’s a case of make-do. The result - badly installed equipment with a high failure rate.

Our speciality is designing and installing equipment, so we are happy to install your equipment for you. We have the specialist tools, materials and knowledge to ensure that your installation is safe and will work for many years to come.  Not only will we install the equipment for you, we will commission it and show you how it works. Call us now on 01248 811677 or chris@marineelectricalpower.com to discuss your requirements.

Atlantic Rower to Visit Beaumaris

Atlantic_email Earlier this year Anthony Taylor rowed the Atlantic Ocean single handed and without any support.  After 79 grueling days at sea, he finally arrived safely in Antigua.

Later this year, he will make a slightly less grueling trip from Manchester to Beaumaris (although 79 days at sea will be nothing compared to a Friday night traffic jam on the A55) to give a talk on his adventures.

The ticket price of £10 will go towards the new Beaumaris Atlantic 85 Lifeboat appeal. Tickets will be available from Marine Electrical.  Book early as there are limited seats available. Call us on 01248 811677 0r email chris@marineeectricalpower.com

August Bank Holiday

P8230011 The planned August Bank Holiday round Anglesey was partly foiled by the P8230033weather. With everyone suffering from cabin fever, we decided on a 6 am start on the Saturday morning. It was the right decision, as four boats left the marina in calm seas with a beautiful sunrise for a back drop. The trip to Porth Wen was perfect with hardly a ripple on the sea. Anchoring in the bay gave us plenty of time for a bacon butty (they always taste better out doors on a nice day), followed by an exploration of the old brick works. As a bonus, a trip round the headland in the dinghy let us explore some of the rocky coast line close up.

P8240051 The forecast for the day was not good, so late morning we headed back for the safety and shelter of the Menai Straits.  The highlight of the trip back was when we were joined by a pod of dolphins - two of them were so close I thought they were coming to join me on board. Why is it that you never have the camera close at hand when you need it?  By the time we were back in the Straits, the wind had built up with some choppy seas around Beaumaris. The journey up to Port Dinorwic was uneventful with the waters around Menai Bridge and the Swellies being calm.  Overnight though, the winds increased to a force 8 accompanied by the traditional Bank Holiday rain.

P8240056 Sunday saw most people disillusioned by the weather but the day turned out to be warm and sunny, if not a little breezy.  Abermenai Point, however, was sheltered and allowed us to get ashore for the obligatory BBQ.  As the tide changed, the sea became a little rougher but with a following sea, the trip back to Port Dinorwic was stress free.

Monday was a typical Bank Holiday with strong winds and rain. On the trip back one of our party was flagged down in the Conwy Channel by a small RIB asking directions to Beaumaris. The waves were about 6 feet and tossing the little boat about. There were two occupants - a young man wearing a thin waterproof and NO life jacket and young girl was wearing a life jacket and what appeared to be a pale blue hoody. They were finally persuaded that the sea was no place to be on a day like this and they finally followed us back to the safety of the Conwy estuary.

Round Anglesey Cruise

P2030068This August bank holiday, Marine Electrical are organising a Round Anglesey Cruise.  Aimed at both novice and experienced motor boaters, this is an ideal opportunity to circumnavigate some of the most challenging waters in the UK.

With overnight stops in Holyhead and Port Dinorwic, this promises to be an excellent opportunity to view the stunning Anglesey coast from the water.  All we need is the right weather.

During the cruise we will be tracked both by the Cpod system and the Spot Personal Satelite Tracker. You can read and download the cruise notes at www.marineelectricalpower.com/Round Anglesey.htm.

Last Day of Conwy River Festival

P8090020 Saturday saw the end of the 2008 Conwy River Festival. The day started badly with wind and heavy rain threatening to make the whole event a complete washout. However by lunchtime the rain had stopped and the sun made an appearance.

On the quay side we were entertained by rowing boat races, dressed yachts complete with real pirates (well they looked real to me), and the RNLI staged a rescue of a jet skier in the water, complete with orange smoke, maroons and red flares. Many boaters on the Quay side commented on the fact that hey had never seen the smokes and flares used before and didn't realise that they only burned for a short time.

The most important discovery of the day was the hog roast, we looked long and hard last weekend with no success - it was advertised but apparently wasn't there...

Ugly Boat?

P8030040Motor Boats Monthly have been running an Ugly Boat competition for some time now. The picture shows a typical candidate recently spotted in a local estuary.

There are many home-built boats which can be found tucked away and many of these are the object of ridicule. Spare a thought though for the owners of these boats. The important thing is being out on the water, not showing off the latest lump of white plastic. The chances are that the people who own these boats can afford to run them and owe absolutely nothing on them. They will have had the satisfaction of building them from scratch and they will know how every last bit of them works.

Many years ago I built one of these ugly boats. It looked like a garden shed floating around Lake Windermere.  It leaked both from above and from below, was made fom hopelessly inappropriate materials and the local boat owners nicknamed it '3 bi 2' (that's 3 by 2 said in a northern accent).

I also owned a little yellow speed boat that cost a whopping £350.  It had a smokey two-stroke engine and broke down more times than it ran.

I have fond memories of my two (young at the time) children enjoying the adventure of floating around on that ugly boat, and to this day, I cannot say that I have enjoyed my time on the water as much as I did then. So next time you look down from the Flybridge of your luxury cruiser at the ugly boat, just remember - they are probably having a much better (and cheaper) time than the rest of us.
